Capturing the Moments

Each child has a photo album like the ones pictured. An album is allotted to them when they arrive. The first picture is usually with the guardian that brought them to remember what they look like. The rest of the pages slowly fill up with life's stages and events. When they leave the orphanage, they take the album with them full of their childhood memories.

The "Babies" in the Baby Room

The four youngest in the baby room (not including Rolian) are Abraham, Sara, Liton, and Daniel. They are an inseparable bunch. They actually remind me somewhat of a family. Sara, being the loving mother, Abraham being the a little shy, but big father, and Liton and Daniel being the 2 mischievous kids. They think it's HILARIOUS if I take out my camera, which gives me good opportunities to get these precious moments captured on film. Written and Captured by Larisa

Chor! Chor! Chor! (Bangla for: Thief!)

A few nights ago, a thief sneaked over to the Home of Love and stole our son's Rubens bike! Luckily one of the girls saw him and that began the loud chase. In complete pitch darkness the thief darted through the thick jungle grass, over building material and managed to slop through the 6 inch mud in the rice field with the bike in tow! But Rahul, Rintu and others were on his tail. The older girls and a small army of children ran behind in the dark, through the field, chanting "Chor! Chor! Chor!". It was just mildly dramatic, let me tell you!
The end of the story is that the kids terrified the poor thief so much that he scrambled over our tall brick wall in a big hurry, but not before stashing the bike in the trees for later. Big, strong Rintu though was not outsmarted and quickly found it.
Talk of the thief permeated the next hour's conversation! And how do you think that I know about this story? If you saw my muddy sandals you would know...

What time is it, anyway?

On June 19th, Bangladesh joined over a hundred other countries in using summer time, i.e. changing the clocks ahead one hour. This new decision was made mainly in order to try and preserve the precious little electricity that Bangladesh has. The time change was the talk of the town as few could understand how it would work or why it was being done. The Bora and Sunrising School directors told me that about 50% of the kids were an hour late for school the following day after the time change! One young nurse that I was chatting with recently told me sadly, "I just wish I didn't have to work now an extra hour longer, it's unfair." When I tried to explain that true, she would come to work an hour earlier but then get done an hour early also, she got a lost expression on her face. I resigned to let her figure it out herself in the coming days!

Visit in little kids room

These are some of the youngsters in the small kids room. The sick helper Stella is well again and back at work. We are glad about that. Some of the HOL children are still sick. At the moment we have a number with pink eye, chicken pox and skin problems.

The babies were not too impressed with the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that I offered them for a snack. At first they thought it was so fun to open and close the two parts, but upon actually tasting, they slowly one by one handed them back to me and shook their head in silent opposition to American food... Even Roben, who is built like a linebacker, didn't take seconds. He did gulp his down when I bribed him with Tang if he would finish his bread!
So much for international food, these babies are happy with spicy curry and rice.
