A rainy day turns into sunshine

On Aug. 15 we wrote about our newest face at Home of Love (what a cute face huh?). She has since been named, Bristi which means rain. It is a popular name in Bangladesh and it was rainy when she arrived! Bristi has brought much joy to the staff as we enjoy her pudgy smile and sweet spirit. Remarkably she has adapted to a bottle and our nursery worker almost overnight. In this picture our daughter, Larisa is holding her.

Only the best for Uttom

Here is another picture of Uttom; his name actually means best. We know that God only has the best for him and so we would ask you to continue to pray for his health. He is often too weak to finish his bottle but still seems to be growing. Uttom has trouble breathing and can not hold his head unsupported even though he is 6+ months old. Our concern is also for him mentally, that all his illnesses would not affect his future abilities. Apphia is holding Uttom in the photo, she is one of the older Home of Love children who used to be taken care of and now she cares for others.

Happy Birthday!

Yesterday we had our monthly Birthday party. Seven children celebrated their special day! On Birthdays we have a small program with dancing, songs, poems, stories, etc. The kids eat cake and get to have chicken curry for dinner. It is a fun time. Each child is given 20 taka (60 Taka =1$ US) as their present, plus a bag of chips. In the picture you can get a glimpse of our big room, where we hold meetings. Below is a close up of the children who had their Birthday in August.

Take a ride on our site

Our daughter, Hannah, is sitting in what we call a Baby taxi. We use this kind of transport daily to commute to and from the orphanage with our whole family, about 30 minutes.

Map of Bangladesh

Since Bangladesh is in the news often recently, we thought we would post a map so you can locate us better. The orphanage is near Chittagong.

Vitamins arrive for Home of Love children

What a blessing it was today to open up a big trunk full of vitamins and supplements for the children! Over 10,000 tablets! Manna Relief Ministries received information about the orphanage and heard about the plights of many of our recent arrivals having been malnourished. They quickly got on the ball and were able to send the vitamins along with our friends who were coming to Bangladesh. Singapore Airlines waived the overweight fees due to the contents being nutrition supplements for an orphanage, another blessing! Now, we have enough vitamins for all the kids (53) to be covered for 6 months. We believe this will make a serious impact on the children health and well-being, especially for those who are weak with various illnesses. We salute this remarkable ministry for making all of this possible! Check out their web page for more information at www.mannarelief.org

Yet, another new face at Home of Love
Last week, a 18yr. old mother tearfully dropped off her daughter at the orphanage. The baby girl is a healthy sweet 7 mo. old. Her family history is unfortunately similar to many, the father left while the mother was pregnant with the dowry money and has not been seen since. He is a migrant barber who travels around the country. The mother is illiterate and works at a clothing factory making about $20.00 a month. She cannot work and take care of her baby at the same time. We have yet to decide on her name as she shares the name of another girl at Home of Love. No matter that we do not know quite what to call her, she has a spot in our hearts already and is cute as can be.

Bricks, cement, baskets and shovels!

It looks like construction around Home of Love will be around awhile! As the staff house (where the Kuehns will live) is nearing completion, the boys hostel and primary school (see picture of brick structure) are still requiring much work. Tomorrow the workers will begin to paint the staff house with their small handmade jute brooms. Bamboo sticks cover the construction site as it can serve almost any need. One can measure with it, hold up cement ceilings, carry things with it, make crooked things straight, and use it for scaffolding. Bamboo is also lightweight and can be used over and over.

A little update on Uttom, he is out of the hospital and at home. He is still sickly and will need special care for a long time it seems. The floods did not affect us in Chittagong at all, but we feel with the majority of the population that was hit. It does seem like its getting better but we still have another month of monsoons to worry about. Please pray that all the aid money being sent to Bangladesh will actually reach those in need.

We are still dry, no floods in Chittagong
Floodwaters are threatening to destroy millions of lives in Bangladesh, but our location in the south remains unaffected. The flood is mainly in the north and in the capital city of Dhaka. At one point half of the city was under water, Dhaka is a huge city of about 10 million, so that means a mass of people are suffering. Many have died and as the waters recedes disease will continue to seek victims, as the sewage systems are flooding into the streets and main water supply.
Misak Bawn in our newest addition and a real joy. The name Misak is from Daniel in the Bible, one of Daniels 3 friends. He is very healthy and friendly. He stretched his arms out to Thomas the first day they met! His father died and the mother left the baby right after and wanted to start a new life. The baby has been living with relatives until now.
Uttom, our little patient is again in the hospital. This time he has pneumonia and remains weak. We trust that God has a purpose in all of this and that God will heal and restore Uttom in His timing. One thing is for sure he is our most expensive child; we have never spent so much on medical bills for one child. That must mean he is quite precious! We all love him and await the day he can be a normal healthy boy.
