From Indiana

Peg and George Cooper visited us in February. They were a big help at Home of Love and brought the kids many new card games and fun things. George was so handy in fixing up things in our staff house and Peg was an encouragement to all with her friendly smile. We are thankful for the good attitude the Coopers showed as we dragged them over very bumpy scary roads in warm weather!

Ajke ekushi Febuari (English: today is Feb. 21st)

February 21st is a special holiday in Bangladesh celebrating mother language day. On this day the freedom fighters from all over the country are hailed who fought with their life for the preservation of the Bengali language. What a beautiful language it is also. All over the city one could see the Bangladesh flag waving and wreaths were placed at the national statues. In the orphanage this morning, during a special program the kids also sang a traditional song about the 21st of Feb. and their brother's blood that was shed. It was moving.

BIG and small

This is Genodoe holding Misak. Genodoe is one of the oldest children at Home of Love and now almost finished with the 12th grade. Misak is the third youngest and a bundle of energy with his 1.5 years! He was too exhausted to see the whole Birthday and Feb. 21st ceremony today and needed a nap in his big brothers lap.

Video Team

Here is Eric holding Bristi. He told me that he wants to pack her up in his camera bag and take her back home with him! Eric is on a video team that is presently very busy producing a video of Home of Love. God willing many of you that meet us this summer will be able to see this video for yourself as we will be bringing it along with us on all our travels. Please set aside about 3.5 hours to watch it as there is much to be included (just kidding, it's only about 8 min. long!). The actors in the video (the kids) have put a lot of hard work into the video; their work today included swimming in the pond, playing cricket, dancing, smiling, answering questions and showing the men how to eat politely with their fingers. It's hard to be a movie star...

Sow and you will see
He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment. Proverbs 12:11

The kids have enjoyed being able to work the land this year and have planted many many seeds. We have harvested chili peppers, eggplant, pumpkin, gourd, cabbage, radish, beans, spinach and other vegetables you wouldn't know (I also don't know the names in English!). It has been wonderful to have the kids working for the benefit of the whole orphanage.

Here is another partial picture of the kids' gardens. Its been a fun new experience for the children to be able to give away some of their produce to our family and other foreigners. As we all know its fun to be able to give sometimes and not always be on the receiving end. Up to date I have received a live chicken, half alive shrimp, dead fish, eggplant and other vegetables.

Primary school opening ceremony

Today was the official opening ceremony of the Bora Primary school. There were over 300 guests and the parents of "Bora" from Korea were also present. There was a colorful tent drawn up over bamboo sticks that covered the entire area where the chairs were. In the picture you can see the foundation stone that was hand-chiseled. Everything almost is done by hand here! The celebration was about 1 hour late in getting started because the main guest, a minister of parliament was late. He finally showed up in the middle of the program with about 10 armed policemen and sirens roaring. After many speeches and the ribbon cutting, there was a cultural program with traditional dancing and Taekwondo performance. Lunch was then served for all who attended.

"Bora" was the name of a young girl that fell out of a 3 story window and died. Her parents set up a memorial fund and helped us to get this school started.

Volunteer from South Korea

Sun-Mee Koh has been at Home of Love for the past one month. She will be a senior in University and wanted to use her winter break to come to Bangladesh and volunteer at the orphanage. She helped in the office and to make pretty decorations for the primary school. Each class is brightly decorated with animals and pictures. We would like to thank her for giving her time and energy at Home of Love. Simol, like many other kids likes to show her around.

More strike days than normal days
I have counted up that in the last 10 days we have had 7 individual days of strikes. That is a lot of wasted time, brain power and money. We are dishearten at the present political situation and hope for a change soon. The children cannot attend school and college and it's more difficult and more expensive to travel to work at the orphanage. One day Thomas and our daughters walked from the orphanage about 3 km as they could not find any taxis and then finally took a rickshaw the last 9 km. It took them about 1.5 hours to get home. Our girls thought it was a grand adventure. Strikes days may do wonders for the air pollution as no vehicles are supposed to be out but it does wreck havoc on the others sectors of society. The strikes are a result of the mindless killing of a former finance minister and 4 others on a podium after giving a speech.

Jungle boys?

The sweet boys in this photo are pretending maybe to be in the jungle hunting Bengal tigers but actually they are in the tranquil grounds of our property at Home of Love. The kids have just discovered the fun that trees can hold and with the many trees planted in the last years they are finally getting a chance to climb some of them! The duck pond is behind them and those cute ducklings that we showed pictures of a few months ago are already starting to produce little offspring of their own now.

something to ponder

Amy Carmichael, (1867 - 1951) wrote this beautiful poem below as a child, after meeting a poor beggar girl.
When I grow and money have, I know what I will do, I'll build a great big lovely place For little girls like you.
Amy Carmichael was a wealthy Irish girl that later rescued orphan children in India. Her life demonstrated a simple obedience to God, no matter what the odds. The story of her life and work illustrates so perfectly what God can do with one single sacrificed life that fears God. Her example continues to inspire us here at "Home of Love" today.
