This is Janet and Jere Scott from Hawaii/Alaska. They visited us in Jan. for 2.5 weeks and were a real help in many ways. Janet got involved in the primary school and gave teacher training, she was so well received that they gave her a party when she left. Jere taught wood carving, made shelves, a cabinet and helped with the setting up of the workshop. The artistry of carving was so exciting that the kids fought over who got to sit next to him at lunch and were always ready for a class. He quickly became a favorite and was named "Grandpa" by all. Jere is 72 years old, has had both knees replaced, cannot see on one eye, walks with a limp and is often in pain, but he came to Bangladesh and was known to sometimes work up to 11pm. One night he climbed down a bamboo ladder at near midnight in the pitch dark as the gates were already locked! Rising each morning, Janet and Jere came to all our meetings. Some of them are at 6:30am. Jere a retired shepherd, spoke to us on Fridays. We were so impressed with Jere's heart and dedication that we wanted to honor him on this blogg. Where are the other Jere's? We have a great wood workshop outfitted with tools but have no one lined up to teach our boys carpentry for the next months. The band saw, table saw, planer and other great tools are begging to be used! If Jere can make the long trip to Chittagong and work, what excuse can the rest of us have? (smile)

Bye, Bye

A couple days ago when we left to do some work in the city and go on the Internet, this was the sight in our rearview mirror. A lot of noise, a lot of kids, a lot of love. The other picture we saw along the way.

Boys Hostel Director

The Korean man situated in the middle of all those happy faces is Mr. Jang. He is the director of the tribal boys' hostel located right behind the Home of Love. Mr. Jang and the boys attend our church service and join in other activities. Mr. Jang is married to Mrs. Jang who had their 2nd child a couple weeks ago. We thank God for people like the Jang's, who came here two years ago and are investing much into this country.

Thank you to Miss Lee

We appreciate Miss Lee from Korea redoing our "Home of Love" bulletin board with new pictures and design. What pretty decoration!

Back to the books

The Bengali school year finishes in December and starts again in January. Home of Love children are getting ready to start school again in a new grade. We have bought the new books for the different classes, had backpacks brought out with the Hawaii team and seem to be all ready. We hope that this year our kids will show more of an interest in learning and studying.

Carpentry Shop under construction

Here you can see a big area being transformed into a carpentry shop of the best sort. It is about 90% finished. Fitted with great tools, benches, 2 great teachers till Jan 25th in a big light work area, it's the perfect place to learn the carpentry trade. God has given a great opportunity to our boys. I have already ordered a kitchen cabinet...

Bible reading contest

Last January we had 25 kids enter a bible reading contest to see who could read through the Bible in one year. We celebrated with 7 kids and 2 staff, who all finished the Bible, last week at the newly opened Pizza Hut in the city. Each one received a disposable camera as a gift.

Hawaii Team

The six member team from Hawaii landed with their feet running and hasn't stopped yet! We did get them to take a little break on the morning of Korbani Eid (2nd largest Muslim holiday) to see the cows being slaughtered and the festivities along with that in the city, but then it was back to work full force. The team is going to set up a functioning carpentry workshop, make mosquito screening for all the bedrooms in the orphanage, put in the playground, make a new drainage system for the playground area, construct and fit bookshelves for the library and other various projects all the while teaching our boys carpentry skills. The goals are rather daunting but the team is stubbornly pushing forward full steam ahead. Hats off to their diligence!

Caution: Kids at Work

The boys and girls are working overtime and extra hard on the playground land. They want to see this happen! Without any bribes of special food, payment or prodding the kids are out there each day for at least 8 hours working very hard. Land has been cleared and many shovels broken and bent! Here you can see a bit of what I see when I look out from our house while I cook dinner for the troops. What a great sight: international teamwork.

Abraham arrives at Christmas

No it wasn't the wise men or the angels, but it was a little baby named Abraham who arrived around Christmas time at the Home of Love. I guess God sent him to us as a Christmas gift and we are glad to have him in our family. He has been warmly accepted as our newest and smallest. Abraham's mother died a few days after birth. The father who works as a security guard / doorman wasn't in the position to take care of the baby financially or physically so he brought him to us. We know that good things are in store for this little man, when he came he was only 5lbs. although he was 3 weeks old.

Future leaders

Here is Thomas surrounded by the boys who look up to him as their Uncle. We have big plans for these boys; plans to bless and heal them, plans to instruct and train them, plans to plant them and watch for fruit. What an opportunity!
