Guests from England

Lindsay and Debbie Hamon visited us recently from Cornwall, England. It was a great joy and encouragement to have them with us. The children loved their funny dramas, enthusiastic teachings, pretty songs/music and the twinkle in both of their eyes. The many walks and friendships that Lindsay and Debbie made in the village were remarkable. Here in this picture they were teaching the Home of Love children a new drama.

Prangoon- the village "Mom-n-Pop" store

This tiny village shop has soap, coca-cola, rice, onions, toys, batteries, candles and much more. Everything one needs for hosting guests or living without electricity. Our daughters love to go to Prangoon to buy candy for their friends or to get me a dozen of eggs, its close enough and just meters away from our property so we allow them to go alone.

Water tanks need cleaning too!

Every couple of months we have to clean out the water tanks that hold our drinking water. This time there was a bunch of cockroaches that had found their way inside. I know that sounds terribly disgusting. The water tanks have layers of minerals and charcoal inside that take out the heavy iron content we have in our water. When the water tanks are cleaned that means that we change the charcoals, stones, and sand also. Before those things are put in the cleaned tank we wash them many times and pick out the gritty stuff. It is a 4 day job for not just a few of our older boys. The two water tanks can hold up to 500 liters (125 gallons).

Many helping hands

Our daughters Hannah (11) and Larisa (10) love the job of putting away new books in the library. It normally takes them a long time as they like to look at each book and read a part of it. They are such a big help to us in so many ways. Larisa is so good at helping in the nursery and both can often be found tutoring the younger ones or quizzing them for exams. Here they are for once getting along and doing each others hair! Sisters are the same anywhere in the world I think!

Generator has arrived!

The kids have been so happy to see the green generator sitting outside now since two days! They know that means something good! It will be so nice to have a regular power supply. Often times we do not have power the whole night and the kids have to use candles to study with. The rooms are dark and mosquitos abound without the fans blowing. Everyone is thrilled with this new gift that has been given to us through the contribution of many generous people from Germany and Korea.

Clean closets = chips

This week I checked the children's' drawers and closets for old clothes and to see who was keeping things tidy. The ones that had clean drawers received a package of chips as a reward. After I cleaned out 5 year old, Shimol's (left) messy drawer and folded his clothes he jumped in excitement and said, "Auntie, now look at my drawer! It looks so nice I bet I will also get some chips!" As always, written by Colleen and

Bob has a terrible case of scabies

We feel awful for Bob who is fighting a serious case of scabies. He has blood oozing from some of the wounds and it's on many different parts of his body. We have been treating him now for nearly a month. Please pray for Bob, he has scabies so bad on his underarm that he can't put his arm down. We have now quarantined him in an extra room so that we can watch him better that he doesn't get unnecessarily dirty and that he takes his medicine and puts the ointment on regularly. Bob is about 9 years old and in the 3rd grade. In the future we would like to build some sick rooms with bathroom and shower so that we can contain illnesses better. We saw the need for this when we had 32 cases of the mumps this spring.

Congratulations Boys!
We are so proud of Genodoe, Ricku, and Sugoto who have just passed their 12 grade exams! The results came out a few days ago. They had been waiting for the results for about 3 months! Unfortunately, Gabriel did not pass. Now the three boys are applying to different universities, please pray that they get accepted. There are not nearly enough seats at the universities as there are students. Only with God's help will they get the opportunity to get in.

Construction of Guest house picks up speed

With the Driscolls arriving in less than a week, the construction has begun to move a little quicker. Thomas and I are busy buying the interior parts like commodes, sinks, tiles. We hope God helps us to build a good quality, simple but comfortable guest house that many can receive a bit of rest in. May it be an oasis for our guests to escape the hot sun and retreat for a bit to read and reflect.

Cleaning fish takes many hands!

The property the Home of Love is on has four ponds. We get fish from these ponds on a regular basis. Men from the village come and put nets in the water which they drag along slowly as they walk along. After the fish is retrieved, the big job of cleaning a few hundred pounds of fish begins. Everyone available normally pitches in to help. We sell some of the fish but most of it is used for the hungry children of the Home of Love!
On the picture below you can see our son, Ruben with one of the fishermen.

Kids in a bird nest?

Recently, the older kids were cutting tall grass to make a football field and were piling the tough grass up in piles. The smaller children were enjoying this opportunity to play "bird nest". Above you can see Asha, Phoebe and Julia squawking like birds and having a ball!

A new face on the boys' wing
A few weeks ago, Andrio came to live with us at Home of Love. He now brings us up to fifty five children. Andrio is about 13 years old and is in the 4th grade. We hardly ever take such older children and have a policy that we only take such kids in extreme conditions. Andrio comes from a very poor family and did not have enough to eat; although quite smart he would never have the chance to have received a higher education if he would have stayed with his relatives. Other circumstances also followed that made it clear that Andrio should be accepted into our family here. Andrio has made a speedy transition to life in this environment, he is Buddhist. Andrio is quite shy around us, but recently called my name for the first time. I remember it clearly, I was giving out apples and many kids were surrounding me when I heard a strange voice say, "Auntie, me also". Living and working with the orphanage children for nearly 10 years has made us very familiar with each one, even so much that we can pretty much identity which baby is crying or who is laughing without seeing them. So when I heard a different voice say, "Auntie" I stopped for a moment and wondered what stranger had the familiarity and audacity to call me their Auntie! As I turned I met Andrio's embarrassed but happy eyes and we smiled at each other as I gave him his apple. I think in that moment he accepted this foreign women as his, Auntie. We are so proud to have yet another to love.

Look at all our books!

Susanna, Dorothy, Priyanka and Hanna

Yes, it sure is exciting to keep receiving packages of books. Thank you to all to have sent us books this far. What a big blessing. We also want to thank God for allowing every box sent to arrive so safely and without any books being stolen. We have now about half of the shelves full!
