Bristi and Uttom

Uttom is holding a car that Patrick made him in the workshop. Uttom is the little boy that nearly died and was in the intensive care unit for weeks upon arrival at the Home of Love. Today he is the most eloquent of all the babies and is very clever. Our fears that his cerebral malaria would affect his brain have been dismissed and we rejoice in all the God has done in this little life.
Bristi is everyone's sweet heart. She is light as a feather and as a petite as a china doll. Her personality matches her bright smile.

Lack of staff

Barmite took over many responsibilities while our nursery nanny was gone because of a death in her family. Barmite and our other staff, Beauty did a marvelous job and the kids rarely asked for their "Mashi" (nanny). Unfortunately, we will be losing our cook and another staff this month as they have decided to return to their hometowns and look for a job closer to their families. We are in need of 3 new staff; please pray with us that we find the right persons with a heart for the kids also.

Thirty six years ago Bangladesh became an independent nation. Today we celebrated the March 26th Independence Day. There was no school today and we all had a fun day. Many of the kids had Bangladesh flags painted on their faces, arms and/or wore red and green clothes. In the city, flags were hanging in many stores and from cars. We have two flags flying over the Home of Love. We are proud of this country and believe that Bangladesh has a bright future!

Ronald was busy today. He painted lots of faces.

Soccer match

A couple minutes ago our Home of Love girls finished a game against William Carey Academy.

We started the game at 4pm in order to have a reasonable temperature outside. We all had lots of fun.

Here is a picture of the winning team. Home of Love won 3:0. GREAT Job girls!!!

Apphia studies for her 12th grade exam

Here is Apphia and I (excuse the no make-up) studying for her English exam. Her ultra important exam is in May, just 6 weeks away. She now spends 5-6 hours a day studying. We hope that she is memorizing the right things and is able to pass with flying colors and become a nurse which is her dream. I made her a big banner and hung it on her study room, it reads: "I want to become a Nurse" and "With God all things are possible".

Welcome back Miss Park

Miss Park has worked with us for seven years. She has recently returned from a year long trip to the USA, Canada, Africa and of course South Korea which is her home country. We are so happy to have her back on our staff as she is a big blessing in many ways + speaks the best Bangla of us all. She was sorely missed as she was away.

Still need books to fill the empty shelves!

As you can see we are still in need of some more books. If you have any books you would like to send or if you know of anybody who would like to go through their children's bookshelves please let us know. We are looking for mainly children's books but encyclopedias, text books and coffee table type books are also welcome. The average reading level is kindergarten through 5th grade. Maybe you enjoy garage sales and could pick up some used books there? Maybe you would like to organize a book drive at your church or workplace? We would enjoy your help to fill up our shelves with good books! Please contact us for more details if needed. If you send only books you can get a discounted price at the post office. We do not need them urgently so you wouldn't need to use airmail either; it's cheaper than you would think!

If you are interested please send the books to this address:

Colleen Kuehn
House 30 Road 1
Hillview E/Nasirabad
4000 Chittagong
Bangladesh

We can assure you the books will be used and pored over by many many hands!

Marble mania

The kids have suddenly started playing marbles. I asked how come they now play marbles excessively and they weren't sure. They haven't played in years and now it's the game. They stamp the sand until It's hard and smooth, then make one hole with their fingers about 2 inches deep. I don't understand all the rules but it seems to be similar to shooting pool. They have a special way how to launch their marbles with one finger pulled back into a slingshot motion.

Going away
We are going to a city called Khulna for a day. We are planning to be there for 24 hours but we will have to do some dangerous traveling to get there. Khulna is only about 380 miles away and a city of 1 Million people it will take us a minimum of 17 hours (one way) to get there. I will be speaking at a weeding of good friends. We will be back shortly with a new blogg.

A big CHEESE from Joy

Joy, which means victory in Bangla, has taken a while to adjust but is now very friendly and happy. He doesn't talk much but we are finding out that might just be his personality and not his lack of understanding Bangla language. Joy is currently in kindergarten and is busy learning to write his name in English and Bangla.

Sugoto enthralls his listeners

Sugoto was telling a few kids a story about a medieval king and army when interest was sparked by the elementary age kids and they decided to sit and also listen. They abandoned a good game of police and thief to sit and listen to a story, so it must have been a good one! Sugoto is a natural teacher. He is very good with babies and children. God has gifted him in many ways. We are proud of the man he is becoming. Sugoto is waiting for university to start and meanwhile is learning much under Patrick's tutorage as a carpenter and handyman.

Sleeping Beauty

This is Joya's little sister, Sara. Isn't she sweet? Her little broad face and wide cheeks are irresistible, one must give her a kiss when near! Sara is developing well and gaining weight steadily. Our winter will soon be completely over, we already have temps in the 80's, so we might be ready to take Sara's stocking cap off!

Spring Flowers

We are delighting in the spring flowers and vegetables of Bangladesh. God has blessed Bangladesh with very fertile soil. This year we have been able to plant and harvest more than past years as we are getting ourselves more settled and the kids are getting more interested in gardening. Thomas has planted numerous strawberry plants and they look cute and healthy but have yet to bear any fruit! This tropical climate might be too hard for them to adjust to.

Free train ticket

If you do not have money for a ticket in Bangladesh there is always the option of slipping up on the roof for the wind compartment seats. Whenever I see them sitting up there I always worry about people falling off but they seldom do. Many dare devil boys walk up and down the train cars while the train is going. They could be stunt men in Hollywood!

Joya

Its fun to slowly see the real Joya (left) emerge as she has now learned some Bangla and is showing her personality more and more as she gets comfortable with us. Joya has been here only 2.5 months. We guess Joya is about 6 yrs old. She is spunky and sweet at the same time. I find my heart filling up with love for Joya.

Sage dresses up

Sage is the daughter of our co-workers, Patrick and Sonia Driscoll. Sage, 5 years, loves living here at the orphanage, eats curry everyday and has learned to play in the dirt like a local! She often foregoes shorts and a t-shirt for the traditional salwar kameez and occasionally a saree on special engagements like a birthday party. We know that Sage will remember this time in her life forever and always have a soft spot for this country.
