Season for rain

We have been having heavy rain lately but our new drainage system around the playground and basketball court has been handling the water well. We used to always have a swamp full of mosquitos, leeches, tiny shrimp and crabs in front of our house during the monsoon. But now we can walk on cement pathways! We used to stamp around in our muddy sandals for months! The ponds have all risen and the scenery is sparkling as the trees and greenery look like they have just come out of the spa.

Birthday Party

For a change we had last month's Birthday party out on the new basketball court.

Instead of the traditional songs, speeches, and dances we had party games.

Everyone was put on a team and had a sash to tie around them designating their team color; we mixed the little ones with the big ones so all had a great time.

Thank you Sonia for organizing such a fun celebration!

Good-bye Priscilla!

We sent our love with Priscilla as she returned home to Chicago the middle of May. Priscilla had spent the last 7 months volunteering at the "Home of Love". She was busy up until the last minute sewing banners for our big room and mending the kids' clothes. The children will miss Pricilla-didi (big sister) as she had many good relationships with them. We are thankful for her big help in the library and with John's therapy + many others jobs she did.

Playground expanded

Our playground has been expanded with 2 more swing sets adding four more swings. Patrick bought old steam and drain pipes from the shipyards but first had to grind off the 10 layers of old paint before priming them and painting them. It was quite a job and took many days. Now the pipes hold our kids as they sway back and forth happily on the new swings. Thank you Patrick and older boys who worked so diligently to provide new equipment for our younger kids!

Thanks to all that prayed for us, our kids in Bangladesh and the "Home of Love" during our time away. God did great things.

God willing, Colleen and I will be going to Sri Lanka for the next 12 days. We will be walking the roads and talking to him about the nation,i.e. we will be walking and communicating with him all day long. Each day we will walk about 10 miles. For that reason there won't be any new bloggs on the website for the next few weeks. Please pray for the residents of the orphanage and our family. Miss Park and the Driscoll family will be here to watch over things. Please pray for our safety in Sri Lanka and that we will all be taken care of. We would appreciate your special prayers for our children who will be staying here in Bangladesh with Catherine. Catherine came just for this purpose from England. We are so grateful to her.

Who needs a ticket?

The people above and the man below decided that they would choose the rather airy private chair for their trip.

APAB Hope clinic

The Hope clinic is open 3 days a week. A doctor, nurse and registrar, who are employed by the NGO (non-govt. organization) we work for, come out in an ambulance from the city to treat the patients. The patients start standing in line for a ticket hours before the clinic opens. It costs 10 taka (14 cents) to see the doctor. The clinic sees a maximum of 25 patients a day. The Hope clinic treats the Home of Love children and staff as well.

Dazzling the crowds

It doesn't take a big film star to dazzle the crowds in Bangladesh. You just need to be a bit different in skin color to be a big time hit. It has been said that staring is something like a national pastime here. Oddly, even after 10 years of stardom our family still felt uncomfortable with all the attention we received recently at the train station in Dhaka. At one point there were probably about 50-60 people doing nothing else than standing in a circle around us and staring. It's like a reality show without cameras but instead a live audience.

Let me introduce you to the Baby room. Here we have from newborn to 3-4 year olds. We have four 2 year old which are learning how to talk, sneak off, and chew chewing gum. Abraham, pictured below, is about 1 year old and is getting his first teeth. He is pretty big for his age and the kids refer to him at "Humpty Dumpty". The kids love teaching him to talk or dance. He doesn't care who you are, he'll waddle up to you with his arms out.
