The latest on Jui

Jui was crying and screaming the last time I blogged about her. She was very bitter and hurt inside. These days Jui is at peace inside and is doing so well. Her face has filled out and she amazes us with her big vocabulary. We have to laugh as she is quite the leader and likes to tell the other kids in the nursery what to do. Thank you for praying for Jui, her mourning has been changed into joy.

Hanna in the hospital

Hanna had to be in the hospital for appendicitis last week. Thankfully it was noticed quickly and she was able to be operated on the same day in the city. We are pleased that the wound has not gotten infected and is healing properly.

Riots and Home of Love?

Last week, students in several Universities all over the country rioted against the stern military action taken during a friendly college soccer game. A player allegedly pushed a policeman accidentally during the game and out of that came a violent brawl that spanned the country. The government had to put out a curfew in order to curb the rioting and closed all the universities. Cars were burned, sticks and rocks thrown and many were wounded and/or jailed. Ricku, who attends Chittagong University, was quite incensed as he studies so passionately! One woman that had recently visited us, left the next morning for Dhaka oblivious to the problems, her train was hit by bricks along the way from protesting students. Two seats behind her the window was broken by bricks, but she was unharmed, thankfully. Presently the problems continue and the curfew is still on for the evenings. The universities have not said when they will open again.

Only during curfew are the roads that empty.

New and old Hawaiian friends
A small team from Hawaii have just arrived, two of the men Jordan and Will have been here before but the other 3 are new to Bangladesh. We look forward to their time with us and all that we will learn from them. They are doing some teaching here.

Good Bye, Driscoll Family!

Patrick, Sonia, Anneka and Sage have returned back to Hawaii and are getting settled again there. We are so thankful for the 9 months that they invested here at the "Home of Love".

I found Patrick the most talented handyman ever. There was no question about practical things that he could not answer. The children were sad to have the Driscolls leave, but understood that they had committed to 9 months and now had to get back to their duties at home. We pray for Patrick and Sonia as they begin this new chapter of life that God would bless them and open up many doors for them.

One of the very seldom "tourist" times.

A "loud" welcome back
We were away in Germany for 5 weeks and as we returned last week, we had an interesting welcome with drumming and clanging. The deafening music was not actually for us but it did begin about the same hour we arrived! It was the annual Hindu Puja festival that runs for 3 days straight. Thankfully, we were exhausted from our long trip and were able to sleep the first night pretty well even with the drums beating just 100 yards from our bed! The music stopped 3 days later. Thank you to Ms. Park and all the other local staff who took care of HOL so well while we were gone. Everything was in order as we returned. We thank God for helping us with our luggage and giving us favor in all our travels. While in Germany we drove 6000km in the one month! As we packed and said our goodbyes, many of our friends asked us how we felt about going back. We were surprised to even have that question posed as it never occurred to us to not want to go back. Bangladesh is our home and we so enjoy living here. Visiting Germany though was very nice and we all had a wonderful time. We loved all the German food, enjoying the outdoors on bike or foot and reuniting with many friends and family. Thank you to the group who sponsored our trip so unexpectedly.

Good Bye, Markus Dada!

The children had to say farewell to Markus-Dada who returned the middle of August to Germany. Markus was a big brother to the children and thus always called, "Dada". Markus helped in many ways, especially in the nursery class. We are thankful for the hours he spent with the teacher and students, it brought fruit! Hopefully, Markus will be able to come back again someday and continue teaching our teachers how to teach children in a good and fun way.

Misak and Morium

These two are classmates in preschool. Misak is "all-boy" and Morium is "all-girl". They couldn't be more different. Morium doesn't like to get dirty, play sports or be rough. Misak is clever, naughty, loves to play rough and get dirty.

Germany
In case you wondered why there were so few updates on our website recently, here is why. Our family went to Germany for 5 weeks (mid July to mid August). This was possible through a unexpected generous gift.

Preschool room gets ready for occupants

Ronald and Markus have been working to get this preschool room painted and fixed up so that the kids can move there from their old dark drab chamber on the boys' wing. The room is bright, colorful, fun and begs for learning. We know that Mrs. Chowdhury, the preschool teacher, will appreciate the new and improved setting. Other boys helped as well.
