Korean Class

Mr. Gang, a former Army soldier, from Korea is teaching the older girls how to speak and write the Korean language. They have been learning Korean on and off for the last few years, but now they are getting regular teaching which is very good. We are so thankful to Mr. Gang for investing his time and energy like this; we know that coming from the city in a baby taxi is not pleasant! Thank you Mr. Gong!

Shoes Galore!!

This is what it looks like, outside the door of our multi-purpose room, when we have a meeting! It is hard to find your shoes afterward and when you do find them they are normally dirty, stepped on and most often not standing together. This is life with a big family!

Welcome Elizabeth!

Elizabeth has arrived to volunteer at the orphanage until December. We are happy that she was able to come. We were unsure until the last minute if she would get her visa, but God helped and just hours before her departure from Germany she was able to get a 2 month visa. Elizabeth is Thomas' niece so we are enjoying having a part of our family here for an extended time. Our girls are happy to be able to practice German now on a regular basis. Elizabeth has been doing John's therapy, assist in the baby room, give daily showers to the elementary boys and just help where needed.

Congratulations, Prodap Teacher!

The children all attended the wedding of Prodap Teacher last week. His real last name is not, "Teacher", but that is what the kids have always called him, so it stuck! Prodap is a teacher at Bora Elementary school and was previously our teacher back when the orphanage was in the city. Prodap is not a trained teacher but has a way with kids and is very talented. We are thankful for teachers like him that really love the kids and aren't just teach doing it for a salary but really enjoys it. We wish him and his wife all best on their new journey together as a family.

Pillows Day-Out

We sit on these pillows twice a day during our meetings. The blue ones are for the girls and the grey ones are for the boys. In our meetings we all sit on the floor except the leader, who stands. The pillows get so dusty and dirty that we often need to air them out.

Awbek and Joshio

Aren't these two cute? The girl (left) is Awbek who I have often spoken and wrote about. Awbek is now 3.5 years and is still not talking much. She does make sounds occasionally and sometimes will say a word if prompted enough. Please continue to pray for Awbek. Joshio is soft hearted and loving. He adores the woman who takes care of him in the nursery and needs lots of hugs to keep him happy. We thank God for all the different personalities of our kids.

The weather has gone wacky!!!

October is normally a very hot month, but this year it has been an extension of the monsoon season. This morning we were inudated with water as the rain just kept falling. When we got up at 6:00am the garage had about 1 inch of water in it. At 8:30am the garage had over 3 feet of water standing. The ponds overflowed into the fields and the whole place is water logged. The farmers were just getting over the last floods and had replanted their fields, now that is all lost once again.

Dress up

The girls got to play dress up with some fake gold jewelry that Miss Park gave them. Like all girls they imagined they were married or that they were princesses the whole day. Now I think all of the jewelry must be lost because I haven't seen any princesses running around here for many days!

Have a good trip, Riku!

Riku is going to his village a couple days ago to get a certificate from the chairman there. He is excited to go back and see his relatives and learn more of his native language. In his village the people do not speak Bangla but speak a tribal language called Chakma. Ricku is eager to learn Chakma so he can speak to his relatives more freely and one day help build schools to educate the tribal children. We pray for a safe trip and that God will help Ricku while he is away.

Iftar for Sale

Iftar is the traditional food that the Muslims eat when they break their fast during Ramadan. Iftar is made up of mostly savory fried treats that are easy to pop in your mouth in a hurry. Today should be the last day of Ramadan in Bangladesh.

New Shoes

The middle and high school girls all got new sandals. Colleen bought a variety of styles and then the oldest girl got to choose her first choice and on down the line. She went to the shoe store all together four times to change sizes and styles but we finally got it all worked out! The girls were delighted to have new shoes and were so thankful.

Skin problems
The heat is intense this time of year and nearly everyone is suffering from some type of skin rash due to the heat and high humidity. Our skin remains damp 24 hours a day, which is a great environment for all types of bacteria. One boy, Joy is covered in heat rash, which has now become infected. He looks like he has a terrible case of chicken pox on his face. The rash itches and is painful. Then we have a bunch of others with yellow abscesses on their scalp and another heap of kids with impetigo. I feel like we are losing this battle!! Everyday more of them come to me and show me new spots. We are treating most of them but need to probably just treat every child, which will be costly and troublesome, especially for our staff. The treatment includes scabies lotion all over the body for two days, antibiotic ointment and the boiling of all of the clothes and bed sheets. With 64 kids the boiling part is not going to happen but with God's help and the medicine we hope to be able to soon stop this irritation before the kids have to go on antibiotics. PLEASE PRAY! As always written by Colleen and

Sheila

Sheila who is 4 years old, is like any child who loves having her Birthday. She was thrilled to death when it was finally her special day. Here she is, in her Birthday hat with her toothless smile. Sheila came to us as a two year old and already her teeth were completely rotten and black. After many trips to the dentist, two root canals and having one tooth pulled, Sheila is now on the road to having a pretty smile one day. Thank you to those who send us extra finances for such expenses like dentist bills for Sheila and others.

Lazy Friday afternoons...

Friday is our day off; none of the kids have school. We eat a special Friday lunch of chicken or beef curry, watch TV, play endless games outside and have extra time to sleep. It is a fun and relaxing day. Last week, Colleen took 28 kids for a big walk, this is becoming a Friday traditional as she loves to take walks and the kids are also catching the bug. We had such fun together, holding hands and talking. We did get quite a lot of stares as the village people must have thought we were having a children's parade! It is now tamarind season and along our walk we found a big tree full of tamarind. A few of the big boys clambered up the tree and began throwing the fruit pods down to the audience below. We laughed and scrambled around knocking each other over in search of the green pods. When everyone's pockets were full we turned for home. The small boys that rarely leave the HOL property were thrilled to have a good supply of tamarind to trade with and share with their heroes, the older boys.

Battered box of books

This is how boxes look after they have been abused and shipped across continents. Before leaving Germany, we went to the spotless clean post office and sent ourselves some boxes of books that were too heavy for our luggage. The box was brand new, sturdy, canary yellow and securely taped up. The box we received was bent, smashed, ripped open and then wrapped up in old string. The string was then secured with an ancient looking seal (see picture) made out of wax.

Sara

As you can see, our little baby Sara is blooming. Sara came to us as a newborn and we have been able to give her all necessary vaccinations, feed her good milk formula and keep her clean, what a difference those things make in the development of a baby! Sara is now 10 months old. Thank you especially to Mashi, Bebi and Barmiti our local colleagues who take good care of her.
