Thomas and Colleen Kühn have been in Bangladesh
since 1997, working with Home of Love. Thomas grew up in East Germany
under Communism. Colleen grew up on a horse ranch in South Dakota,
USA, and rodeo
was her passion. Later in high school she was struck with her lack of direction
and purpose
for life
at 18yrs and gave herself wholly to God, never looking back. They have long
since loved this part of Asia and wanted to help with orphans in
some way. When
the
chance came to be a part of Home of
Love, life soon changed
dramatically. Arriving with two toddlers
of their own and only a few suitcases they set out to learn Bangla and adjust
themselves to this radically different
country. Now, years later, those two toddlers,-Hannah, Larisa, and Ruben (born
in 2000), speak Bangla well, swim in the green colored ponds and eat rice with
their fingers
like
any local. The whole family
has long since called this nation home.
Six full-time staff work in the Home and three
teachers. They are also from mixture of tribal and Bengali backgrounds.
Their jobs are 24 hours a day as the full time staff live dispersed
throughout the orphanage, so that at least all the smaller children
have one person with them at night. They also enforce bedtimes and
make sure the kids have their rooms cleaned. We find our staff very
kind and committed. They love the kids and have fitted into this “family” so
well. Many of the staff are women that have stayed with us through
sickness, lack of water over many years, lack of electricity, construction
workers, floods, and simple food. Their commitment extends past their
monthly salary.
